Theme Four: MOVEMENT
People:
Circulation is
the repetitive, short-distance movement of people. The most familiar pattern in U.S. culture is commuting. Most of us still commute by private
automobile and the impacts upon our environment and society are enormous.
Migration is
the less frequent movement of persons that involves a change of residence. Migrations can be either short or
long-distance, but typically they involve a much longer stay than in the case
of circulation.
Every time a person moves,
short-term or longer-term, there are impacts.
These include everything from population composition to housing, jobs,
and the quality of the physical environment.
Movement inevitably causes
change. Consequently, Geography is a
dynamic discipline.
Concepts include: Friction of
Distance, Gravity Models, and APush/Pull@ factors.
Things:
The movement of things is
generally termed diffusion. Ideas,
innovations, fads, disease, all move across the landscape. Like the movements of people, diffusion of
objects and ideas create change in culture and society.
Concepts include: Channels,
pioneers, barriers, hearths
