Theme Four:              MOVEMENT

 

 

People:

 

Circulation is the repetitive, short-distance movement of people.  The most familiar pattern in U.S. culture is commuting.  Most of us still commute by private automobile and the impacts upon our environment and society are enormous.

 

Migration is the less frequent movement of persons that involves a change of residence.  Migrations can be either short or long-distance, but typically they involve a much longer stay than in the case of circulation.

 

Every time a person moves, short-term or longer-term, there are impacts.  These include everything from population composition to housing, jobs, and the quality of the physical environment.

 

Movement inevitably causes change.  Consequently, Geography is a dynamic discipline.

 

Concepts include: Friction of Distance, Gravity Models, and APush/Pull@ factors.

 

 

Things:

 

The movement of things is generally termed diffusion.  Ideas, innovations, fads, disease, all move across the landscape.  Like the movements of people, diffusion of objects and ideas create change in culture and society.
