Colorado Geographic Alliance (COGA)

Along with Dr. James Dunn of UNC Geography, I am presently co-coordinator of COGA, an organization of K-12 teachers, professional geographers, and others interested in improving K-12 geography education across the state. Membership is free. See the COGA website for further information and programs (Colorado Geographic Alliance).

Research Interests

My primary interest is to better understand the processes of teaching and learning geographic concepts. I am working with initiatives to improve geography education at both the undergraduate and K-12 levels.

For college education, I am co-PI on on a 3-year, $495,000 grant awarded by the National Science Foundation to develop instructional materials for international online collaborations for teaching and learning geography. My colleagues are Dr. Michael Solem, Educational Affairs Director of the Association of American Geographers and Dr. Osvaldo Muņiz, Professor of Geography at Texas State University-San Marcos.

In this project, we are revising and expanding a project called the Center for Global Geography Education (CGGE). This is a web-based set of issues-based, inquiry geography modules, in which students at universities in different countries work together on a series of case studies and international discussions about contemporary geographic issues. The CGGE materials developed during Phase 1 of the project (2003-2005) include modules on Nationalism, Global Economy, and Population. These are available for use at the project web-site: Center for Global Geography Education. I was the project evaluator for CGGE - Phase 1 and the results of that research (which are available in their entirety on the CGGE web-site) informed our proposal for Phase 2 of the project, which was funded by NSF in September 2007.

In Phase 2, we will streamline the existing modules, add three new modules (Water Resources, Migration, and Global Climate Change), translate the modules into a third language (presently available in English and Spanish), enhance the online capabilities for faculty using the project, and conduct workshops at international conferences to enlarge the network of international geography faculty using this instructional technology. During 2008, we will have CGGE workshops for new geography faculty at the AAG Annual Meeting (Boston, April), the Congress of the International Geographical Union (Tunis, August), and the annual meeting of the HERODOT European Geography Network (Liverpool, September).

At the pre-collegiate level, I have developed geography instructional materials for all grade levels and assisted school districts with the creation of standards-based assessments. Dave Diggs (UNC Geography) and I developed a set of Internet-based GIS mapping activities for elementary- and middle-grades (Colorado's Geography: Mapping Our Past). We welcome your suggestions for improving this resource for teachers.
