SUMMER 2009: STUDY ABROAD OPPORTUNITY
Geography 392: Field Study in Iceland and the Faroe Islands
6 credits
JULY 2009
This field program begins with 3 days in the classroom and approximately 3 weeks in Iceland and the Faroe Islands. The course is designed to expose students to cultural geography and environmental issues in the North Atlantic.

We will experience first-hand the geography of Nordic cultures, Icelandic and Faroese language and myth, environmental issues and sustainable development, ecotourism, and everyday subsistence struggles at the local scale. Our field courses in Iceland will be based in Reykjavik, where we’ll visit several geothermal power plants and national museums.
Our field courses in the Faroes will be centered in Torshavn, the world’s smallest capitol, where classroom lectures and discussions will be held. We’ll use afternoons to venture out to several of the nation’s 18 other islands for various field excursions, including a study visit to the fabled Vestmanna bird cliffs, site of the largest concentration of migratory birds in the world.
