UNIT 5
TECHNOLOGICAL
ASPECTS OF BIODIVERSITY MAINTENANCE
Concepts:
Many conservation area systems, including that of the Denver Metro Area,
were developed in a somewhat ad hoc
fashion for purposes such as preservation of natural wonders, outdoor
recreation, and maintenance of timber, livestock, water, and military resources. Large, rapidly increasing losses of natural
biodiversity in the last half of the 20th century now require that existing and
future conservation area systems be developed and designed to maintain
biodiversity, as well as provide other important resources. The new science of Conservation Biology,
together with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and additional recently
developed technologies, provides the scientific basis for accomplishing this.
GIS data are available for teachers in the Denver Metro Area. Please contact your technology staff.
